Before she passed away this past February, my Mom lived for 8 years in the aftermath of a debilitating stroke. She was paralyzed on her right side, wheelchair bound, incontinent, and aphasic to the point where she could only pronounce a handful of words to express herself (yet still fully aware of her surroundings). Mom was basically reduced to the equivalent of an 80-year old infant who required full-time attention, first by her husband (my Step-Dad) and later in a long-term care facility.
Prior to her stroke, one thing Mom really enjoyed was treating herself to massages. That’s how I came to meet Lesley. I was looking for someone who would periodically come into the home to gently provide therapeutic tissue work on Mom. Lesley skillfully did that and so much more. She read books to Mom. She occasionally brought her dog with her to visit with Mom. She gave my Step-Dad a brief respite from his caretaker duties. She was another set of eyes and an advocate for Mom in her nursing home. In short, Lesley loved my Mom. And when she attended Mom’s funeral along with the rest of the family, Lesley fit in just like one of us. Because she is.
I exhaustively searched far and wide across multiple states and in every corner of the Internet for someone like Lesley. There may be others out there who do what she does…but I couldn’t find any.
